WordPress

WYSIWYG:

  • No built-in accessibility functions.

  • No warnings after writing accessibility-breaking HTML —

WordPress Accessibility Team: https://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/

  • Audits WordPress updates and checks them for accessibility against the latest standards

  • Not an official department within WordPress -- consists of volunteers

  • 6 working groups; seemingly comprehensive coverage of issues

  • Not sure how much real impact the team has on WordPress updates.

  • Why isn’t this team pushing for updates to the WordPress WYSIWYG editor?

Wix
  • Wix’s WYSIWYG is fairly straightforward, with less toolbar options than WordPress.

  • Text customization options are paltry and include: Bold, Underline, Italics, ordered/unordered list, and links.

  • The lack of text customization options and Wix’s enduring popularity can be seen as an opportunity for A11yFirst, because taking away text customization options could allow for easily-enforceable accessibility guidelines.

  • Wix documentation for users includes a page on accessibility

  • Wix documentation for developers also includes a page on accessibility
